Calling all Biodanza facilitators! Come join the discussion on Saturday May 15, 5pm (BST) Let´s talk about the contact-phobia triggered or increased by lockdown Different cultures have different attitudes towards physical contact, as demonstrated in the 1960s by psychologist Sidney Jourard, "who studied the conversations of friends in different parts of the world as they sat in a café together. He observed these conversations for the same amount of time in each of the different countries. What did he find? In England, the two friends touched each other zero times. In the United States, in bursts of enthusiasm, they touched each other twice. But in France, the number shot up to 110 times per hour. And in Puerto Rico, those friends touched each other 180 times!" Source Biodanza was created in a high-contact Latin American culture, where "people tend to touch each other more often, maintain closer interpersonal distance and make more eye contact." Biodanza then moved from Chile to Brazil and eventually to Italy, that is, to the Mediterranean, another high-contact culture. It then spread around the world, bringing with it its invitation to embrace the many benefits of touch. However, the reality is that Biodanza facilitators living in low-contact cultures have been struggling with very low numbers of participants. These are cultures where "people tend to touch each other less often than is usual in most cultures, maintain more interpersonal distance, face each other more indirectly and have less eye contact". Now, in addition to this, facilitators are now facing the extra challenge of resuming classes and dealing with the contact-phobia triggered or increased by one year of lockdown.
What you bring to the table is up to you, just make sure it is related to the main theme. And remember to not monopolise the conversation so that everyone has a chance to speak. And consider taking some notes of the things that stood out for you to share with the big group at the end. Here is an example of questions raised by a couple of facilitators
